Nine-month-old Connor McCue had a successful liver transplant operation in January but passed away last night surrounded by his family
Nine-month-old Connor McCue, from Meir Heath, in Staffordshire, was born with Biliary Atresia, a rare sickness of the liver and bile ducts that occurs in infants.
Earlier this week, he was also diagnosed with cerebral palsy .
Despite undergoing a successful liver transplant operation in January, Connor died just after 10pm last night surrounded by his loving family.
The tot's mum, Jessica McDonagh, wrote on Connor's Facebook page: "Last night at 10.09pm Connor Daniel McCue fell asleep and grew his wings. He was in my arms and Paul was holding him too."
She continued: "Yesterday was such a beautiful day. He was baptised and we all laughed. Connor was extremely peaceful and comfortable yesterday outside all afternoon in the sunshine.
"He has been the biggest and bravest boy and we are so proud of him. Even until the very end he was and still is our hero.
"We will always love you. We will always miss you and you will always be our baby boy.
"Night night gorgeous."
Connor underwent two organ donations earlier this year after the first one failed and he was put on the "urgent" list.
As his parents sat anxiously waiting for news of the operation, they backed the Mirror’s campaign for all adults to become organ donors.
The portal vein in the first transplanted organ, which is the main source of blood for the liver, had collapsed and Connor had a second major operation as surgeons at Birmingham Children’s Hospital tried to repair the damage.
Despite their efforts, the organ failed to fully function and an agonising wait for a second liver began.
After a second organ became available, Paul, from Stoke-on-Trent, posted on Facebook: “We are a go!!!! Liver is in good condition, the vessels all match and Connor is going down theatre right now. Please God let this be the operation that saves my boys life!!!”
He and partner Jessica, 27, are also parents to son James, 5, and Paul has two older children from an earlier relationship.
On March 28, Connor's mum wrote a post on Facebook to keep the family's supporters updated.
She said: "Over the past few days Connor's blood pressure has got a lot worse and the PICU team are finding more and more difficult to bring it back up.
"Lots of tests have been done to try and find what's happening but they are not 100% clear. His brain is getting worse and having seen him today he's nowhere near as responsive as he was last week.
"It breaks my heart to say but it looks as if he's given up and has had enough.
"We and the team spoke about what to do if his blood pressure continues to drop and we agreed for the next 48 hours at least to help him bring it back up, and then we will see how he gets on.
"But me and Jess both feel that it's only going to get worse and eventually his body will give up."
"We are absolutely in bits and feels as of our hearts have been ripped out because of everything we've been through," she continued.
"As his parents we want to fight for our beautiful baby boy but we don't want to see him suffer.
"This afternoon I made a heartbreaking decision by telling them not to act of he goes into cardiac arrest because it's not fair on Connor to keep putting him through this.
"I'm praying to God that his blood pressure sorts itself out and his brain isn't damaged too much, but sadly we don't hold much hope."
Little Connor passed away two days later.
