Residents and tourists on the Indonesian island were woken by strong tremors as the quake struck at around 7.10am local time on Wednesday
Building shook across the region as the quake struck at around 7.10am local time on Wednesday morning (11.10pm Tuesday night in the UK).
The earthquake was centred about 20 miles south of Denpasar, the capital city on the south of the island, and struck at a depth of 72 miles, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).
One resident told BNO News: "Woke us up. Bed shaking, windows rattling. Was stronger than normal, probably shook for about 60 seconds."
The extent of any damage or casualties was not immediately known.
Shaking was felt in Denpasar, Mataram, Banyuqangi, Genteng, and other cities, BNO News reported.
